Why Deodorant Stops Working — And What To Do Next

Deodorant is one of the few products we rarely question. We tend to use the same one for years, until, suddenly, it doesn’t feel the same.

Skin becomes more sensitive. Irritation appears. What once worked easily no longer does.

A personal starting point

For Jo Nova founder Joseph, this shift became personal. When his daughter developed highly sensitive skin, conventional deodorants repeatedly caused irritation. What should have been a simple, everyday product became a problem to solve.

He approached it differently.

Instead of adding more, more fragrance, more complexity, he stripped it back and focused on what the skin actually needs, and what it can comfortably tolerate, day after day. The aim was a more considered formulation, with fewer ingredients, designed to feel right to use consistently.

That approach became:

JO NOVA ILLUMI DEO BALM

A simple, skin-focused deodorant designed for comfort and ease of use.

When things no longer feel right

For many women, this kind of shift happens later on, particularly during perimenopause. Skin can become more reactive, and ingredients that once felt fine can start to feel too much.

Deodorant is often where this shows up first.

As Joseph explains,

What you could tolerate before, you may not tolerate now. The mistake is assuming the product is still right.”

A simpler approach

The instinct, when something stops working, is often to look for something stronger or more complex. But when skin becomes more sensitive, a simpler approach often works better.

Using fewer ingredients, and creating less interference, can allow the skin to feel more comfortable again.

The Illumi formula

Illumi was created with that in mind.

A small number of ingredients, each with a clear role:

A list of the key ingredients contained in Jo Nova Illumi Deo Balm, with a small picture of each ingredient. Arrowroot Powder, absorbes moisture without heaviness. Lavender and sage oils, for a light natural, freshness. Coconut oil, supports the skin's natural balance. Shea and cocoa butter, helps to keep skin comfortable. Sodium bicarbonate, helps neutralise odour. Activated charcoal, helps to draw out impurities.

Nothing unnecessary. Nothing excessive.

I’ve struggled with sensitivity, but this is one of the few deodorants I can use comfortably every day. It’s gentle, effective, and just works.”

What happens when you switch.

Illumi works differently to traditional antiperspirants. It does not block sweat, but instead works with the skin.

There can be a short adjustment period at first. With consistent use, comfort and confidence tend to build over time.

A different way to think about deodorant

For many women, this is not about finding something stronger. It is about finding something they can use every day, comfortably.

Something that simply feels right again.

When your deodorant stops feeling right.

Make the switch.
